I would also check out Avast! Home Edition.

While you're at it, the following additional steps help performance too:

* install and run ad-aware (free)

* defragment your hard drive(s) with the windows tool

* grab a free start-up organizer to disable unnecessary tasks from launching %26 using resources every time you start your computer.

You can get this and loads of other usefulfree stuff from www.tucows.com. They have tons of stuff in several catagories of software and they provide good ratings.
Well technically what I'm about to recommend is not free, but rather a free TRIAL. You might want to check it out anyway though... sometimes when you get something for free, you really get what you pay for. Consider... how important is it to you not to get a virus?

And then... who do you want to be working on the updates to your antivirus software? Somebody doing it for free? Or a well-paid team of software engineers at a major company?

Consider... would you give much credence to somebody giving away free car insurance? When that accident happens, I want to be able to call somebody pronto!
