in other words, does it have to start when the computer starts? or can we start it manually??

u can start it maually ..no problems there but u will be better off letting it start automatically as some virus might sneak in during

boot and then it might prevent ur antivirus from starting at all even manually.
mine is loaded at the beginning but it depends which one it is. I wouln't load Norton for instance as this consumes so much of your resources
