I have been using Avast for a few years now and highly recommend.

Select home user for free install or if you a company you will have to pay required fees.

Constant updates that come over the internet connection are up to date ...put it this way I have only had one trojan attempt and it was stopped dead in its tracks.

Both programs run in the background and barely affect the speed of your PC
most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

As far as Anti virus, I don't know. But for spyware and Adware, Spybot Search and Destroy is great, and free. They do accept donations, though.
